The Zink the Zebra Patch Activity for Daisy Girl Scouts

Zink's Patch Activity is more than a great plan for a Daisy troop meeting. It is also an excellent opportunity to help girls learn to appreciate individual differences and foster compassion and respect for others.

The Zink Patch Activity has the #1 qualification for a good troop activity:
IT'S FUN!

The girls in the troop will:

  • Watch the Zink the Zebra animated video as a troop/group.
  • Talk about things that make people alike and different.
  • Share with the girls who Kelly was and why she wrote the book.
  • Have the girls share what they know about people who are or were sick with cancer or other illnesses.
  • Give the girls a very basic understanding of cancer, stressing that many people are survivors.
  • Share a snack that represents how wonderful differences can be.
  • Have each girl make a Get Well Card for someone ill.
  • Have each girl make a paper bag puppet and discuss what makes them special.
  • Participate in a service project (optional).
  • At the beginning receive their very own Zink beanbag toy and a patch at the end.

The activity centers around the story of Zink the Zebra, along with the story of Kelly Weil, the story's 11-year-old author who created the tale as part of her struggle with cancer.

Cancer is touched upon in the Zink program because it is an equal opportunity disease. It strikes without respect to race, creed or gender.

The stigma of this disease...which touches the lives of almost every girl's family...is used as a means to show how being different can be uncomfortable for all of us. It encourages positive interaction, to help girls grow into compassionate, respectful, kind girls and women of the future.

Sound interesting? If your troop isn't scheduled to enjoy this fulfilling activity, here's how to get the ball rolling!
