Dealing With Intolerance
- Address the situation immediately.
- Privately discuss the incident with those involved and avoid further embarrassing either party.
- Listen actively and sensitively to all involved.
- Explain that the behavior is hurtful, harmful, and not acceptable.
- Give support to the victim and attend to his or her feelings rather than focusing solely on the offender.
- Don't perpetuate the abuse by insulting or humiliating the offender.
- Thoroughly investigate the incident before imposing consequences.
- Apply consequences in accordance with school rules and policies. Implement ongoing, pro-active strategies with students for combating intolerance, bullying and prejudice.
