The realistic photographs may be too frightening for some young students. However, the stories are written in language simple enough for children to understand. |

| Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

A young girl is diagnosed with Leukemia ten years after the atom bomb in Hiroshima. She is determined to get better because of her dreams of being an outstanding runner. She begins folding paper cranes in hopes of finishing one thousand, and, at which time, according to an old story, she would be healed by the gods. Although she is not able to finish one thousand before dying, her friends finish the cranes before her funeral. There is now a peace memorial in Hiroshima dedicated to Sadako. |
